What’s up?
Of late, I’ve been dating my computer. I’ve been spending both time and money on her, in hope that she’ll treat me well when I need her to.
I’ve been offered 2 freelance jobs since my resignation (1 on a monthly basis), so it isn’t as bad as I thought. Also, I’ve signed myself up for 2 months of gruesome work in Chris Yeo’s feature film ‘In The House Of Straw’. He’s not a friend, he’s a sibling! I say sibling coz I can’t determine if he’s a brudder or a sista. So, no more brain deadness plans for me. I seem to be more busy than when I was full-timing. I guess this is what happens when you start taking full responsibilities for yourself instead of seeking shelter under some company with a damaged roof.
Also, I’ve been able to indulge in listening to music on shuffle in itunes, something I stopped doing when I started started full-timing. It’s such an understated joy, especially when you’re surprised by a long lost song. And this is one that crept up on me and it never fails to perk me up, hopefully it works on you too! It’s called ‘Papaya Mango” sung by the very elegant Shiina Ringo.
Wow…
I just came back from watching ‘Angels and Demons’. And may I say that it was simply excellent. Minus the fact that I haven’t watched a blockbuster in a long time, it gave me the same feeling I had when I watched ‘The Dark Knight’.
Perhaps it was the awesome work of Hans Zimmer, or the frenzy buzz that huge blockbusters often offer. But after sitting through the credits and some research, I realised these films have more in common than just a fantabulous music composer and a sky high budget – they also have Mel Wesson.
If you sit through credits as often as FSV alumnis do, you’ll notice the role ‘Ambient Music Designer’ surfacing pretty often. What exactly does an Ambient Music Designer do? As the name suggests, it’s a little bit of music, a little bit of sound design and a whole lot of experimenting with both to create soundscapes that suit the mood and the characters. A film score is constantly identifiable and distinct, while an ambient music design is playing more with the subconscious and Mel Wesson fucking good at it!
You’ll have to watch the films to get what I’m saying. Fyi, he was also on ‘Transformers’, ‘Da Vinci Code’ and created the sound presence for ‘Hannibal’. You can check out his website here.
I’m hooked!!!
I Love Pink Dot!
Pink Dot was a great success! More than 2500 people showed up to show their support for the freedom of love by forming a giant pink dot in Hong Lim Park. The organisers did a kickass job! Congratulations!
Besides the organisers, the laws of attraction were also hard at work. From a van that wouldn’t start to the much dreaded rain to Popular having a members-only sale to missing microphones and uncharged speakers and it goes on and on. It was one helluva ride, but the organisers really kept it together. Matt and I were the Sound ICs of the day and we also helped out with the sound mix of the promotional videos. To the Pink Dot team, thank you for letting us be a part of this.
A picture speaks a thousand words. If you were there, you’d definitely remember the great vibes, if you weren’t, can you feel it from the pictures?

The Pink Dot

The wonderful ambassadors – Rosalyn, Swee Lin, Tim – and Pam Oei. Matt and I depended on them to stall the audience while we tried to get the speakers to work!

Pink people mountain, pink people sea. I had a great view the whole time coz I had to stand on a stool to control the speaker levels.

I hope the dye is temporary. Reminds me of Tepi. Hmm… where is she?

With organisers Jack and Dominic and Sir and Lady Pink Dot!

Sir and Lady Pink Dot! One of Lady Pink Dot’s eye fell off so I had to replace it with the mouth and replace the mouth with a flower post-it. Hee hee.
The photos here are taken by Jackson Aw, Lee Min Hui and Dennis Chong. See more of them here and here!
I shall end this post with the event video Junfeng edited right after the event! Love!
I Want A Home
Preferably one that looks like this!

And So It Is
Dear Friends, Colleagues, Clients and Collaborators,
After 2 years in Yellow Box Studios, I’m leaving. My last day of work is a week from now on 19th May 2009. I have no concrete plans for now, but taking a break sure sounds good to me!
It has been a fruitful learning experience and I appreciate having had the wonderful opportunity to work with each of you. I’m sure we’ll have the chance to meet/work again as I’ll still be audio engineering on a freelance basis, so do consider me for your next projects! I’m also considering teaching audio post in schools, so don’t get a big shock when you see ‘Ms Lim’ around.
For future enquiries, you can contact Yellow Box producers Susie and Sarah at 6222 1278 or through their emails susie [at] yellowboxstudios [dot] com and sarah [at] yellowboxstudios [dot] com.
For coffee and catch ups, you can call me anytime at 9061 8695 or email tingli.lim [at] gmail [dot] com. Let’s keep in touch!
Meanwhile, we still have a week to hang out together in cozy Box2, so head on down!
All the best,
Ting Li
I Quit!
Yes, my friends! Most of you would’ve already heard about my resignation. I’ve been with Yellow Box for 2 years now and it’s time to move on!
“Move on to what?” you may ask. Well, I have no concrete plans for now, but buying The Sims 3 (launching 2nd June!) and spending time rotting at home playing it sounds damn good to me. I need to be brain dead for a while. After being under the management’s scrutiny, I want to play God!
There was no real trigger that led me to quitting. As you know, it was only a matter of time. I had a super long weekend – 2 days of medical leave plus Labour Day, Saturday and Sunday. It felt good not having to go to work, and I wanted that feeling to continue.
After my indefinite period of brain deadness, I’ll resume working. Teaching audio post sounds good to me and I realised I might actually have the patience to teach. Although the interest in audio engineering doesn’t seem great amongst students, aspiring directors should still learn about the importance and potential of sound in their films. Sounds like fun to me.
Freelancing will be a continuous option, so don’t forget to consider me for your next project! I have a home studio setup, good enough for short films, and we can always book studios for recording and presentation.
After so long, I finally have something to look forward to – my last day and the launch of The Sims 3! Let’s earn some simoleans before SGD!
Red + White = Pink
I’m featured in this video done by Pink Dot, along with Swee Lin, Roslyn, Tim Nga, Pam Oei, Yu Beng, Kay Siu, Electrico, Xiaxue and Matt (haha). Enjoy!
The track used is called ‘Dreams of a Butterfly’ composed by the very talented Darren Ng. You can hear more of his great works here. His album is also available at Asylum.
I’m twittering!

Making Pink Dot!
If you yet to hear about the upcoming Pink Dot event, you should check it out here!
In a nutshell, on 16 May 2009, people dressed in pink will aim to form a giant pink dot at Hong Lim Park in support of freedom of love, regardless of sexual orientation. Aerial photographs will be taken. If you too feel that LGBT people deserve to express their love like the rest of us, please pledge your attendance and join the facebook group.
I was on sick leave today, but I did something way more productive than going to work. If you’ve already checked out the websites, you’d have noticed the cute Pink Dot mascot! It has now come alive!
Say hi to Sir Pink Dot and Lady Pink Dot! My masterpieces. Thanks to Junfeng for printing the templates for me. I believe the templates will be available on their site very soon.
I’m going to share how I made them.
The Making of Sir Pink Dot
Step 1:

Download the template from Pink Dot’s website (available soon!) and print it out. It should fit on an A4 paper. Here, you’ll find outlines of the eyes, mouth, arms, legs and any elements of your chosen Pink Dot. For Sir Pink Dot, I’ve used pink corrugated board, pink & white paper and some paper fasteners.
Step 2:

Cut out the elements. I stuck to the original colour scheme, but it’s entirely up to you if you feel like improvising. I’ve also pasted the arms and legs on corrugated board so it is strong enough to withstand being swung around. Getting the perfect circle isn’t easy. But I did it with the help of this:

It’s the perfect size! (Btw, petite Lady Pink Dot was shaped with a microwave base plate.)
Step 3:
Stick the elements on and attach the body parts with paper fasteners! It’s great coz it gives them freedom to move (and love)!
Finally, stick a pole or stick behind them so you can strut them around at the Pink Dot event!
The Making of Lady Pink Dot
Lady Pink Dot was done in more or less the same way, except her hair was cutouts from old magazines and her eyes and mouth are circle foams found in boxes of DVDs!
Here’s a close up:

See! The eyes and mouth pop out and she has a lovely rose hairpin to keep her hair in place.
Also, note that the pupils are of a lighter shade of pink to bring out those eyes.
So there you go! The possibilities are endless! Go make yourself a Pink Dot before we make a giant one on May 16. See you there!
I’m Aware!
What a strange month it had been. Besides experiencing crazy weather with mood swings strong enough to bend street lamps, there’s the swine flu outbreak, a near ephiphany about my career, the first time shooting a cremation, realising that I love as much as I hate and of course fundies hijacking a secular NGO.
It was such an honour to be in the presence of the most amazing, intelligent and passionate women in Singapore. I’m talking about members of the AWARE old guard (now the current exco!) and those who came forth to speak on their behalf. Person after person, speech after speech, each one no less inspiring. I feel so proud to be a Singaporean woman! I’ve always believed that an organisation will only triumph if it’s managed bottom-up (i.e. First its people then the management etc.), and for the first time in my life, I’m a witness of it!
Josie and her pussycats were seated on the panel, on an elevated stage, with a microphone each. Everyone in the hall could see them clearly. However it was the voices from the floor that stood out. The speakers could barely be seen, covered by reporters, photographers and others who wanted to put a face to the words. Efforts by Josie and gang to clamp down the voices were futile. Tried as they might to turn the mics off, get security to escort “unruly behaviour” out and even bawling out “shut up and sit down!”, they could not bury the voices. It was loud and clear. And it rang into the hearts and minds of each supporter, a great reminder throughout the long and draining meeting of what they were there for. And perhaps even made sense to the opposing supporters – only 2 remained at the end of the night.
I applaud the gracious behavior of the old guard. Throughout the grilling 9 hours, never once was vulagrities spewed even when faced with discourtesy. Each speaker spoke with dignity and reason and most ended with “thank you”s. The same cannot be said with the new guard, but thanks to them, there’re now great t-shirt taglines for fund raising (Get one here!)!
At the end of the day, nobody should hold anything personal towards Josie and gang (except the 90k of course). It was what they represented that we should be against. If they honour their word to remain as members and volunteer where possible, they should be given a fair chance to redeem themselves. However, if their beliefs still do not coincide with AWARE’s, they should just leave AWARE alone and start a group of their own. And should they be up to no good again, we’ll always be ready for another fight.
Next up for AWARE? I think they should start thinking of how to put 3,000 volunteers to good use! I can’t wait!!!
*Exhales* What a great day.
