Save AWARE
My friends, I’m sure most of you have already heard about the AWARE saga by now. If you have, I urge you to sign up for membership and attend the EGM this Saturday. If you are clueless as to what had happened, please read up on it here and here, and then do the same.
Please be reminded that this is not a homosexuality issue as the new committee has steered it to be. It is about protecting women in Singapore and this concerns anyone who has a mother, a sister, a daughter, a niece, a loved one who’s female and of course ourselves.
Let’s not let extreme religious agendas be in the way of women’s rights. You can still do something about it, here’s how:
- Sign up for membership at http://www.aware.org.sg (Membership is at $40 per year, for students under 25, it’s $5) and print out your membership confirmation email.
- Subscribe for updates at http://www.we-are-aware.sg to notify the old guards of your attendance and get updates.
- Attend the EGM with the printout and your I/C at Suntec City Convention Center Hall 402 on Saturday 2 May 2009 from 2 – 5p.m. Registration is 12 – 2p.m, but please go early to ensure admission.
- Spread the word!!!
For those of you who can’t attend the EGM somehow, go sign the ONLINE PETITION: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/gender-equality-for-all.html
You have voting rights if you are Singapore Citizen or Singapore PR, 18 Years and above; and Female. Make use of this right.
Please act really quickly. Let’s not be sitting on the fence anymore. Let’s help the old guards continue their great work. Let’s speak up NOW.
Threshold (人质)
I should really start compiling my showreel. Meanwhile, here’s the trailer of the latest film I’ve completed, directed by Loo Zihan.
PS: Live strings rock!
Let’s go swimming
I haven’t been updating lately. Like I mentioned, it’s a little hard to blog when I’m feeling down.
The company’s morale is at an all-time low. Just a week ago, my producer was called into the head office for a meeting. Her contract was whipped out and the management told her that her contract has ended and they have no intentions to renew it, so “you don’t have to come to work tomorrow.”
There was no warning, no advance notice, no tact whatsoever. It was and still is infuriating. And Mr. Boss had the cheek to talk to Matt and I right after to assure us of a “bright future” in the company. Was that what he said to keep his loyal employees whom he conveniently and continuously exploited? I’m not buying it. Nothing is exclusive in this case – the same treatment could’ve happened to me. The signs are clear enough and they’re pointing to the door.
But not all is lost. I read this on Junfeng’s blog
As Mr Brown put it during the discussion: a recession is good for the soul. People on the fast track in their careers suddenly see a less-defined way ahead and start questioning what they’ve been doing.
Not that I’m already on the fast track, I have a long way to go. But if the recession hadn’t occurred, it’d have took me longer to see the true colour of the management (it’s not what they claim apparently). I would’ve been comfortable with a paycheck that was enough to pay the bills and still allowed for some savings. I’d have settled. And god knows what kind of hell will break loose when the company merges under one roof. *shudders*
The lure has revealed itself and the fish will swim away. This time, to bigger waters.
I love my friends!

Sam sam, good luck for the play! Don’t forget your lines! Feng feng, be safe and come back sooooon!
Everyone else, let’s meet up now n()W NOW!
Abbababa
There’s nothing like an ABBA song to light up a gloomy day!
And the verdict is…
B: Boss, S: Staff.
B: The paycut is non-negotiable. I only have x amount of dollars on the table. Where am I supposed to find the money to pay you? Where? You tell me! We’ve been in the reds for 8 months and for the past 8 months, we’ve been maintaining your salaries.
S: What about the investor’s money?
B: The investor’s money is for the facility. We cannot touch that. You want to talk to my private investor? You want?
S: Mediacorp cuts the staff’s pay by 10% and gives a 4 day week.
B: How big is Mediacorp? And how big are we? Cannot compare. If we allow a 4 day week, what are you guys going to do?
S: Freelance.
B: That means you’ll be a competitor.
S: It’s simple business sense. When you’re threatened, you buy out your competitors. So will you allow a 4 day week if we do something unrelated?
B: No, it’ll affect the scheduling. Once the economy recovers, we’ll reinstate your previous salaries.
S: That’s open ended.
B: The recession is open ended. Why don’t you ask America when they will stand up on their feet? If you think you can get better money outside, then go, by all means. I’ll be happy for you. Every studio is in the same situation.
S: They don’t have overheads like us.
B: What overheads?
S: The new facility, the board of directors..
B: The board of directors don’t get paid.
S: Oh, they don’t get paid.
B: Yes, the board of directors don’t get paid.
S: So this is it. Nothing we say would matter right?
B: Yes, nothing.
Staff leaves room.
Basically, I’m working for a company who has a managing director who can’t manage, a private investor who invests in facilities and equipment WITHOUT operators and a board of directors who don’t get paid.
Wow.
