A Month of Openings!

Two people close to my heart have recently embarked on a new chapter – one in an ever-rapid growing business and the other, in his life.

My dear friend Georgiana has achieved her dream of having her own boutique. MDSCOLLECTIONS opens on the 8th of November on the 1st floor of 16 Haji Lane.

If the relation between the shop and the road already sounds familiar to you, MDS was part of The Loft, just down the street! With a store all to themselves, I’m sure Geo and her trusty partner Jiaming will be displaying a whole lot more of lovely apparels to cloth you with!

Now, when will the store be filled with Geo’s collections? We’ll wait and see!

Jerry, my mentor and a pillar in the audio industry, is temporarily resting his ears and pursuing his culinary career as a wanton mee seller at Allson Hotel’s semi-alfresco hawker centre. “Authentic Malacca Wanton Mee” opens on 10th November and will be ready to whet your appetites by lunch!

I’ve tried his sister’s famous wanton mee in Malacca. Malaysian wanton mee is different from the Singapore’s. It’s wetter and the char siew is done differently. But the key difference has got to be the soya sauce based gravy – it is realllllly fragrant. Slurp slurp!

I’m guessing the most common question he’ll face is, “Eh, you Malay ah? How come can sell pork?” Well, Jerry’s eurasian, so his features and skin colour looks a little Malay. Don’t be alarmed when you visit his stall!

Good luck my dears! And like Tony Bennett and KD Lang, “I wish you success and loads of happiness”!

Inventions of the day!

For the iPhone maniacs out there, let me interest you in the iOrgane.

On top of misspelling Orange, this demonstration looks like it’s done by a person with 2 right hands.

BUT, you really have to hand it to the Chinese. They can pirate anything! Just look at the number of “iPods” at Sim Lim! One day, they are going to overthrow the biggies in the industries!

Are you tired of your spectacles but think it’s too troublesome to buy more than one? Well, no fear! The RGB Rainbow Glasses will solve all your vanity woes!

Simply fill up the glasses with ink in your desired colour. Once you’re bored, drain the ink, and replace with one in a new colour!

Last but not least, here’s something to give you a peaceful sleep tonight.

The Safe Bedside Table!

Practical, and will sit in well with your other wooden furniture.

Cyclists, check this out!

http://wirelessbrakelight.wordpress.com

A wireless brake light for cyclists! According to the website, it harnesses “wireless Nintendo Wii technology which senses G-FORCE differences more acutely compared to a motion sensor, MAXXON Wireless Brake Light indicates to other road users & cyclists when your bicycle slowing down/stopping – just like brake lights on cars”.

Imagine a world where bicycles have brake lights and the right of way! Right of way? Yes! Like in Portland!

These are green boxes and lanes for bicycles! Notice that the bus stays behind the green box? This system gives cyclists priority to turn first without being squashed by other vehicles! The city actually acknowledges cycling as an official form of transportation – one that deserves its own lane and safety precautions!

If Singapore wasn’t so warm, we could free ourselves from rising petrol and ever-changing public transport costs AND keep fit at the same time!

Jamis & Louis

With partial sponsorship from Emmanuel and Kim May, I’m going to buy a bike and get into cycling! Jogging is too much of a bore. At least with cycling, I can feel the wind in my hair.

For the past week, I’ve been searching for 2nd hand bikes for sale on online bike forums. I thought it’d be easy, but nooooo… A bike consists of more than just a frame and 2 wheels linked on a chain. There’re shifters, v-brake, disk brake, suspensions… Damn, even the handlebars are a symbol of status. To top it off, all of these parts comes in different ranges like LX, XT, XT-R… the abbreviations can kill.

But now that I’m into it (mostly for the health and slimming aspects, not really the geeky cool shit in this case), I’m hoping to build my bike starting with this:

Isn’t it b-e-a-utiful? I’m not going to drown you with the tech specs that I can copy and paste, but I tried it and it felt good. Secure. And, it’s the same colour as my car! I can already imagine it mounted on a bike rack on my car. But who cares about colour when you see this:

Simple white frame. I’d put this on my wish list if I’m that good a rider. But for now, the Jamis is all I can afford to be seen with. And I’m sure I’ll be looking real good with it! Exercise, I’m going to conquer you!!!

A glimpse of Adrian Tomine’s Shortcomings

I love that his works are sliced right out of everyday life. These are conversations real people could have. Very nice.

And for those who thinks I’m plagarising, I’m not! More previews are available at www.drawnandquarterly.com

Motherfucking driver

I was driving to Box1 at telok ayer street yesterday when a motherfucker decides to crash onto me at a two-lane left turn into Pickering Street. When I put up the bumper sticker “Kiss my ass, I need the cash!”, I didn’t actually expect anyone to follow it.

He swiftly took out his driver’s license and IC as he exited the car, giving the impression that he has done this many times before. I was kind enough to offer to go to his appointed garage instead of my own ‘lest there’s any discrepancies later.

When I did not receive details of his workshop as promised, I called and SMS him but to no avail. And when I tried calling again today, I was sent to the voicemail! He did mention that he was going to be away for a week, but he should at least return my call!

I’ll probably resort to the police for this. God, it’s so fustrating to be hit and still have to go through all these trouble. Motherfucker.

Learning to blog

I think my friends are all too busy to blog. I, on the other hand, seem to have ran out of things to blog about – nothing seems interesting/important enough.

However, Emmanuel did say that as a friend, he’d read whatever I write, even if it’s mundane everyday life ongoings. He also said that I put too many pictures/videos and write much too little. So here’re some random happening!

I read an article recently that says Google’s making us stupid – nobody does deep reading anymore and “deep reading… is indistinguishable from deep thinking.” I can’t help but agree. As I read the article, I find myself scanning for keywords too quickly for a proper read. On top of twhat, Google gives everyone the same access to information so it doesn’t make me more intelligent than you. When was the last time you relied on google instead of your knowledge?

If you’re interested, here’s the article: Is Google Making Us Stupid?

The article had me hitting the books (yes, those dusty pages binded by a crumpled spine). I’m reading My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult and it tells the story of a 13 year old girl who’s sueing her parents for the right to her body when they decide on a kidney transplant to save her older sister. The gripping story is told through multiple characters – the protaganist, her parents, her attorney and her dying sister. From my Google search (agh!), it’s slated to be released as a movie in 2009.

The latest version of itunes is getting on my nerves because it’s functions are closely linked to the itunes store and credit card information is needed to start a proper account. I’m skeptical for hidden charges billed to me. I thought technology was to keep up with us but recently, the tables seem to have turned.

Lastly, for those who enjoyed yearbookyourself.com, may I interest you in faceyourmanga.com. It’s a site that allows you to make an anime-like avatar of yourself from their templates.

Here’s what I’d look like if I was an anime character at work:

For those who haven’t seen me in a while, I have long hair now!

And this is what Matt’d look like if he was an anime character driving:

Have fun!

Us Pod

I got it I got it! Or should I say WE got it?

It almost feels like getting a dog together. It symbolises a long term commitment, and a side of my split-gemini-personality is feeling a little tingly (how apt.). Pardon me for my reaction – I’m not used to sharing, but what the heck, let’s give it a shot!

Emo aside, our brand new 160GB ipod is filled up to 20.41 GB, contains 4502 songs that can be played for 45 days, 15 hours, 29 minutes and 58 seconds. That’s more than a month of non-stop music!

I foresee many more music filled joy rides! Whoop whoop!
